5 minute Q&A with Chris Wales

13 May 2009 Philip Smith No Comment

Name: Chris Wales
Role: Graduate Officer for Yorkshire CF

What makes you a Conservative?

A belief that the power and responsibility of each individual person is the ultimate force in creating a better society, and it beats the tyranny of top-down bureaucracies every time.

What are you currently working on?

An exciting new project to regenerate a long-term, sustainable network of under-30s to augment the existing CF branches in Yorkshire and the Humber. Labour famously chanted “Things Can Only Get Better” in 1997, but ever since that high watermark their membership has been in freefall. I’m working to make sure we avoid their mistakes and have a strong, self-renewing base of supporters behind us long after we win the next election.

Who is your political hero?

No big surprises, it’s Margaret Thatcher. She continues to inspire me because she continually stood her ground and fought for what was right, not what was popular. She was strong on the sort of conviction we’ve not seen from governments for some time, and gave us genuine reasons to be proud of bring British. She remains one of our greatest ever stateswomen.

When do you think the next General Election will be?

June 3rd, 2010. Labour’s beat and they know it; and none of them want Brown’s job right now. He’ll cling to power as long as he can and let them pick up the pieces afterwards.

Why should people get involved with organisations like Conservative Future?

Someone once said “decisions are made by those who show up”. It’s easy to be an armchair critic of the problems in society, but it’s a greater person who stands up, gets involves and makes a difference. It’s that same power of the individual I mentioned earlier – the power to achieve great things, to make a better society, vested in each and every one of us. So I’d tell people to get involved with CF for the same reason I’d encourage them to support any cause they believe in: if you want something better, you’re the best person to go and make it happen.
