5 minute Q&A with…Philip Smith

10 June 2009 admin No Comment

Name: Philip Smith
Role: Regional Chairman for Yorkshire and Humber CF

What makes you a Conservative?

A strong belief in lower taxes, controlled immigration and decentralizing power from Whitehall to Local Councils. Growing up on an inner city estate in Leeds also had a profound impact upon me witnessing first hand Labours failure to tackle the menace of anti social behaviour. It is only the Conservative party in government that will get a grip of law and order.

What are you currently working on?

Expanding the membership of Yorkshire CF and providing more opportunities for current members to attend campaign events as well as providing opportunities to meet other members of CF. I am also finalizing the details of the Yorkshire CF London visit which will take place in June. Am looking forward to another stint in the Commons chamber!

Who is your political hero?

No surprises, Winston Churchill for leading Britain through the Second World War. He continues to inspire me because of his attitude to KBO (keep buggering on) during the darkest days of 1940 when a Nazi invasion of Britain looked imminent.

When do you think the next General Election will be?

Without doubt June 3rd, 2010. Brown never takes unnecessary risks. With Labours current poll ratings Brown will hang on until the law forces him to call a General Election next year. With a bit of luck he will lead Labour into a bigger defeat then we suffered in 1997. Am praying for less then 150 Labour MPs!

Why should people get involved with organisations like Conservative Future?

It is easy to make a lot of noise outside the tent. It is only fighting for your views inside where you can make a difference! Conservative Future provides the perfect opportunity for young people on the centre right of politics to not only express there views to people who will take them seriously but will also enable you to put forward ideas for improving the way in which our party and country operates in a lively discussion environment.

CF also provides a fantastic spring board to get involved with politics with lively social events being a regular addition adding a much needed fun factor! CF is tomorrow’s Conservative party which I hope many new faces continue to get involved with.
