5 minute Q&A with…Will Stobart
Name: William Stobart
Role: Chairman of Manchester University CF
What makes you a Conservative?
I have always been very independent, and as a result I believe strongly in individual responsibility and social justice. I also support free market principles and the belief that government should be kept to a minimum, without jeopardising the freedom, prosperity or aspirations of anyone in society. These are all beliefs which I have found to be reciprocated in the modern Conservative Party.
What are you currently working on?
Mainly on planning freshers and beyond and trying to find ways of attracting as many people as possible to join CF next year. Beyond that, trying to organise speakers, events and campaigning for the rest of the year.
Who is your political hero?
I think this a very difficult question, mainly because I take the basic assumption that all humans are flawed and therefore all politicians are flawed…
Perhaps rather bizarrely, I would describe John Major as someone whom I most admire among politicians of whom I know something. Although, like all, he had his failings, he was the leader in perhaps one of the difficult periods in the history of the party. His comeback in the 1992 election was one of the greatest turnarounds in political history, and his economic legacy was the finest of any British Prime Minister. And at a time when the party was becoming restless, and many people lost all discipline, he still succeeded in preventing a major split in the party of a kind which may still come to pass in the Labour party in the next few years.
When do you think the next General Election will be?
I’m fully expecting it to be 6th May 2010 (e.g. at the same time as the local elections)
Why should people get involved with organisations like Conservative Future?
Because it intimately involves you in the process of changing this country for the better. Anyone can sit on the sidelines and complain about things they don’t like. It takes something more than that to stand up and do something about it.
